Transmission help!!!?

i have an eagle talon 96 with auto transmission. not tsi or esi. but the transmission can not shift into gear "L". i can shift from Park to Reverse to Neutral to Drive to "2" but not to "L". what may be causing this? do i just need to get new transmission fluid? or additive? or is it a major problem?
