Question about aspartame?

I recently heard on a radio program that aspartame can cause optic nerve damage which can lead to blindness. I have a very difficult time believing this claim - with aspartame having been widely used since the mid 80's, shouldn't we presently have an epidemic of blindness throughout the world?!
